A recent New York Times column highlights the Wichita Community Foundation and other philanthropic organizations who are rethinking ways to meet community information needs. At WF, we believe a strong foundation of local news has the potential to enrich communities, bring people together and inform their way of life.
To shift the trajectory of local information needs in our city, the News and Information Fund at WF committed a record $1.1 million to launch The Wichita Beacon, a nonprofit news organization dedicated to public service journalism. This grant not only marks the largest discretionary gift in our 35-year history, but it also brings us one step closer to shaping the future of local news access in Wichita.
The investment goes even further with WF and the American Journalism Project’s continued partnership. This collaboration creates a combined $3.85 million three-year grant commitment to the development of The Beacon.
“By transforming the local news ecosystem as a whole, our diverse community can engage in quality content that is central to their lives and the health of our city,” said WF Director of Strategic Initiatives Courtney Bengtson.
We look forward to continuing our work with American Journalism Project and The Wichita Beacon to enhance the local news ecosystem. Learn more and support The Wichita Beacon
